Ben Sherman Size Guide
Ben Sherman is a British menswear label rooted in mod-inspired tailoring, sharp shirting and everyday casualwear. The brand uses two complementary sizing systems: inch-based chest and waist measurements for formal blazers, shirts and trousers, and alpha sizing (XS–4XL) for outerwear, casual shirts, knitwear and jersey. Footwear is sized in UK, with matching EU, US and millimetre foot lengths published on the official chart. Ben Sherman does not publish hip measurements; compare chest and waist only, and allow for minor variation of 1–2 cm between styles or fabrics.
How to Measure
- Chest: Wrap a tape measure under the arms and across the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape level across the back. Breathe normally and do not pull the tape tight.
- Waist: Measure around the natural waistline, typically just above the navel, where formal and casual trousers sit.
- Neck (formal shirts): Measure around the base of the neck where the collar band will rest. Allow one finger of ease for comfort.
- Inside leg: Measure from the crotch seam down the inner leg to the desired hem. Ben Sherman offers Short (30″ / 76 cm), Regular (32″ / 81 cm) and Long (34″ / 86 cm) leg lengths on formal and casual trousers.
- Feet: Stand on paper, mark heel and longest toe, and measure the distance in millimetres. Match this to the brand’s mm column rather than guessing by shoe size alone.
- Belts: Measure an existing belt from the buckle prong hole to the hole you normally use, or measure your waist where the belt will sit.

Product-Specific Guidance
Formal blazers and overcoats: Select by chest size in inches. A 40″ chest corresponds to EU 50. If you sit between sizes, size up for layering over knitwear. Shoulder fit should feel clean without pulling across the upper back.
Formal shirts: Neck size is decisive—a collar should accept two fingers between fabric and neck. Match chest to your blazer size: a 16″ neck pairs with a 42″ chest on the official chart. Regular-fit styles from stockists may include slightly different body widths; check collar and chest together.
Formal and casual trousers: Formal trousers use inch waist sizes (30″–44″) aligned with EU 46–60. Casual chinos and shorts also publish alpha waist mapping—an M casual waist is 34″, while a formal EU 50 waist is also 34″. Choose Short, Regular or Long inside leg based on height: S = 30″, R = 32″, L = 34″.
Casual shirts, polos and knitwear: Use the alpha top-half chart. Mod-fit and slim styles may feel closer than relaxed jersey knits at the same label. Woven retailers note chest ranges of roughly 33–35″ for XS through 51–53″ for 3XL when a garment sits between alpha steps.
Footwear and trainers: Size from foot length in millimetres on the official chart. UK 9 equals EU 43 and a 290 mm foot length (29.0 cm). Leather uppers may feel snug initially; allow a thumb-width at the toebox once broken in.
Belts, hats and underwear: Belts run S (32″) through XXL (40″), with S/M at 34″ and L/XL at 38″. Hats are S/M (57 cm), L/XL (59 cm) or one-size (58 cm). Boxer shorts use dual waist ranges—for example M covers 33″–35″ (84–89 cm).
Sizing Tips
- Ben Sherman publishes separate charts for formal tailoring and casual alpha sizing—never assume your casual M equals a 40″ formal chest without checking both tables.
- Formal shirt buyers should prioritise neck measurement; chest and sleeve length follow from the brand’s paired chart.
- Trousers share EU numbering with waist inches on formal styles: EU 52 equals a 36″ waist and a 42″ blazer chest when buying a full suit.
- Casual trouser alpha waists run slightly smaller than formal inch waists at the same letter—compare the 34″ M casual waist against the 34″ formal waist for your preferred fit.
- Inside-leg codes S, R and L are consistent across formal and casual trousers; if hems vary by style, Regular (32″) is the safest default.
- Footwear sizing is unisex on the published chart; women converting from US women’s sizes should use the foot-length column rather than UK alone.
- Allow 1–2 cm tolerance between garments, as noted by authorised stockists—knitwear and washed cotton may measure differently from structured tailoring.
- Between two shoe sizes, choose the larger if you wear thick socks or prefer a roomier toebox; match millimetre measurement first.
