England Netball Size Guide
England Netball is the governing body for netball in England, supporting players and teams across all competitive levels. Our size guides are based on the Gilbert Netball standard sizing system, designed to ensure a comfortable, performance-ready fit for women's, men's, and junior netball athletes. Whether you're purchasing training kit, match wear, or netball footwear, accurate measurements are essential for optimal movement and comfort on court.
How to Measure
- Chest/Bust: Place one end of the tape measure at the fullest part of your chest or bust and wrap it around your body, keeping the tape parallel to the floor. Do not pull the tape tight.
- Waist: Find the narrowest part of your natural waist. Position the tape measure horizontally and avoid holding it too tightly; you should be able to move comfortably in the garment.
- Hips: Stand with your legs together and measure the fullest part of your hips, ensuring the tape passes over your bottom. Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor.
- Inside Leg (for trousers): Measure from the crotch to the cuff of your leg. It is best to measure while wearing the shoes you will wear with the garment, so the hem sits at the correct point.
- Height: Stand barefoot against a wall with heels together and measure vertically from floor to the top of your head.

Product-Specific Guidance
Women's Training and Match Wear
England Netball women's clothing is designed for freedom of movement and durability on court. Training tops and shorts should allow unrestricted arm and leg motion; if your measurements fall between two sizes, choose the larger size for comfort. Vests and fitted training wear are cut closer to the body, so refer to your exact chest and waist measurements. Match bibs should sit comfortably over training wear without restricting movement or stretching.
Men's Training and Match Wear
Men's netball kit is engineered for athletic performance with emphasis on leg length and chest room. Ensure you measure your inside leg carefully when wearing the shoes you intend to wear during play. The sizing table includes both height and leg length; if you fall between two sizes, prioritise leg length over chest measurement to avoid shorts that are too short or long.
Junior Netball Clothing
Junior sizing is closely tied to age and growth. Use the age range as your primary guide; measure your child standing straight, and allow a small amount of room for growth if purchasing for the coming season. Ensure inside leg measurements are taken with shoes on. Shorts should sit at the natural waist without pulling, and vests should have enough room to move but not so much that they restrict play.
Netball Footwear
Netball trainers require a snug fit in the heel and midfoot to provide stability during quick lateral movements, whilst leaving adequate room in the toe box for comfort. Always try footwear with the socks you plan to wear. UK sizing is the standard for netball shoes; convert to US or EU sizes only if ordering from international suppliers. Consider half-sizes if your foot measurement falls between whole sizes.
Netballs
Size 4 netballs are lighter and slightly smaller, designed for children aged 10 and under to build handling skills and control. Size 5 netballs are the official match-standard ball used in senior training, regional, and national competitions. Clubs and schools should stock both sizes to support age-appropriate skill development. Always check the circumference and weight specifications when purchasing to ensure compliance with England Netball regulations.
Sizing Tips
- Measure over undergarments: Wear the type of underwear or sports bra you would wear during play when taking measurements, as this affects fit.
- Use a flat mirror: When measuring chest, waist, and hips, position yourself in front of a mirror to ensure the tape is level and parallel to the floor.
- Allow room to breathe: Netball kit should never feel tight across the chest or waist. You should be able to insert one finger comfortably inside the waistband.
- Check hem length: Shorts and trousers should end at the top of your shoe or slightly above the ankle. Measure inside leg wearing the footwear you will wear on court.
- Growth room for juniors: Children grow quickly; if your junior player is near the upper end of an age range, consider sizing up slightly to allow room for growth through the season.
- Netball footwear fit: Trainers should feel snug in the heel to prevent slipping during pivoting; there should be approximately one thumb's width of space in the toe box. Loosen laces before putting on or taking off to avoid heel rub and prolong shoe life.
- Layer for training: If you wear a base layer or compression short under your netball shorts, measure over this layer to ensure the outer shorts fit correctly.
- Test movement: Once you receive your kit, move side to side, jump, and reach overhead to confirm the fit allows full range of motion without bunching or riding up.
