Foehn Size Guide
Foehn is engineered for the uncompromising athlete and the dedicated outdoor enthusiast. Our design philosophy is rooted in precision, technical excellence, and the necessity of a perfect fit. In high-performance environments—whether you are navigating alpine ascents or enduring coastal winds—the margin for error is non-existent. A poorly fitted garment can compromise mobility, trap moisture, or fail to provide the essential thermal regulation required for survival and performance. Therefore, Foehn implements a rigorous sizing standard that prioritises anatomical accuracy and layering compatibility. Our apparel is designed to move with the body, providing a streamlined silhouette that minimises drag while maximising protection. This guide is intended to help you navigate our international sizing systems to ensure your Foehn gear performs exactly as intended, providing the reliable, precise fit that our brand is synonymous with.
How to Measure
- Chest Measurement: For both men's and women's tops, wrap a flexible measuring tape around the fullest part of your chest. Ensure the tape is positioned horizontally across your back and level under the arms. Do not pull the tape too tightly; allow enough space for comfortable breathing and the potential for a base layer. premium
- Waist Measurement: Locate your natural waistline, which is typically the narrowest part of your torso or where your waistband naturally rests. Wrap the tape around your waist, keeping it parallel to the floor. For performance trousers, ensure the measurement is taken where you intend the garment to sit to avoid constriction during movement.
- Hip Measurement: Stand with your feet together and wrap the tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks. This is a critical measurement for technical trousers and leggings to ensure that mobility is not restricted during strenuous activities like climbing or trekking.
- Foot Length: To ensure the correct fit for our performance footwear, place your foot firmly against a flat surface with your heel against a wall. Measure from the back of the heel to the tip of your longest toe. We recommend performing this measurement while wearing the type of technical socks you intend to use with your Foehn footwear.

Product-Specific Guidance
Technical Shells & Jackets: When selecting a Foehn outer shell, always consider your layering system. If you intend to wear a heavy mid-layer fleece or a down insulator underneath, we recommend sizing up to ensure that the articulated sleeves and hem do not restrict your range of motion. A shell that is too tight will compromise the insulating air gap required for thermal efficiency.
Base Layers: Our base layers are designed for a precision, second-skin fit to facilitate moisture wicking and compression. These should be worn close to the skin. If you prefer a more relaxed fit for casual use, consider moving up one size, though this may reduce the performance benefits of the compression technology.
Performance Trousers: For trekking and alpine trousers, the fit around the hips and thighs is paramount. Ensure there is sufficient room to allow for deep lunges or high steps. If you are between sizes in the waist, we suggest sizing up and utilising our integrated adjustment systems to secure the fit.
Footwear: Performance boots and trail shoes must accommodate natural foot swelling that occurs during long-duration activities. Ensure there is approximately 0.5cm to 1cm of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe to prevent bruising during descents.
Sizing Tips
- Measure in the Evening: Your feet and body can swell slightly throughout the day due to activity and temperature changes. Measuring in the evening provides the most accurate representation of your maximum size.
- Account for Layering: Always plan your clothing layers before choosing a size for jackets and shells. A size that fits a t-shirt perfectly may be too restrictive when worn over a thermal mid-layer.
- Use Performance Socks: When measuring for footwear, always wear the specific technical or wool socks you plan to use with your Foehn boots to ensure the volume of the shoe is correctly assessed.
- Prioritise Mobility: In outdoor performance, it is almost always better to have a slightly larger fit that allows for movement than a tight fit that restricts circulation or range of motion.
- Check the 'Last': Be aware that different footwear models use different 'lasts' (the internal mould). A wider-fitting boot may feel different than a streamlined trail runner, even in the same size.
- The 'Two-Finger' Rule: When measuring for waistbands, ensure you can comfortably fit two fingers between the fabric and your skin to allow for breathing and natural expansion during exertion.
