Mammut Size Guide
Mammut is a Swiss mountaineering and outdoor equipment specialist known for high-performance footwear, climbing harnesses, and technical apparel designed for alpine environments. The brand's sizing philosophy prioritises precision and safety, particularly in footwear where the Mondopoint system ensures exact fit measurements. Mammut products are engineered for serious climbers, mountaineers, and outdoor enthusiasts who demand reliable, durable gear. Note that Mammut's international size conversions differ from standard systems used by most other brands — always refer to the measurements below when ordering.
How to Measure
- For Footwear (Mondopoint System): Remove the insole from a pair of shoes that fit you well. Using a steel measuring tape, measure from the extreme tip of the toe to the extreme tip of the heel. The measurement will always round to the nearest 0.5 cm (e.g., 25.0 cm or 25.5 cm, never 25.2 cm). This Mondopoint size is the length of the boot liner in centimetres.
- For Harnesses (Waist): Measure around your natural waist with a soft tape measure, keeping it snug but not tight. Wear the clothing you typically use while climbing.
- For Harnesses (Thigh Circumference): Measure around the fullest part of your upper thigh, again wearing typical climbing attire.
- For Gloves (Hand Length): Measure from the tip of your middle finger to the wrist crease along the inside of your hand.
- For Gloves (Hand Width): Measure across the widest part of your palm, just below the knuckles, with your hand relaxed and flat.
- For Clothing (Chest): Measure around the fullest part of your chest with arms relaxed at your sides. Keep the tape parallel to the ground.

Product-Specific Guidance
Footwear (Boots & Shoes)
Mammut footwear uses the precise Mondopoint sizing system, where each whole size equals exactly 1 cm of internal boot length. This system is more reliable than traditional UK or EU conversions. Important: Mammut's UK sizes run a half size too large compared to standard conversions — if you normally wear UK 8, order a Mammut UK 7.5. Similarly, Mammut EU sizes run approximately 0.7 of a size too small — if you want an EU 43, order an EU 44. Always measure your foot using the Mondopoint method above and match it directly to the chart provided. Snowboard boots and mountaineering boots in particular benefit from this precision.
Climbing Harnesses
Mammut climbing harnesses are offered in clearly defined size ranges based on waist and thigh circumference. Choose the size that accommodates both measurements within range; if you fall between two sizes, prioritise the thigh measurement for comfort and safety. Harnesses are designed to be worn over climbing trousers, so account for typical layering. Waist sizes should feel snug but allow room for one finger to slide underneath when fastened.
Gloves & Mittens
Glove sizing is measured by both hand length and width — ideally both measurements should fall within the same size bracket. If they span two sizes, choose the larger size for comfort and better dexterity in cold conditions. Mammut gloves are engineered for alpine use and often feature extended cuffs; ensure your wrist size will fit comfortably under your sleeve.
Outerwear & Clothing
Mammut outerwear and technical trousers are offered in international sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL). Fit is designed for layering over base and mid-layer garments. Men's and women's cuts differ significantly — women's items feature shaped waists and shorter body lengths, whilst men's styles offer wider shoulders and longer torsos. Always check the specific product's cut, as backcountry jackets and climbing trousers may run slightly longer than urban outdoor wear.
Backpacks
Mammut backpacks are sized by back length (the distance from your C7 vertebra to your hip bone) and overall capacity. This ensures the hip belt sits at your natural waist and the shoulder straps align with your shoulders. Back lengths typically range from 43–46 cm for adult packs. Choose your size using back length as the primary metric.
Sizing Tips
- Mondopoint is your friend: For footwear, always use the Mondopoint measurement rather than UK or EU sizes. Measure both feet, as they may differ by up to 0.5 cm, and order the size matching your larger foot.
- Account for Mammut's non-standard conversions: UK sizing runs 0.5 size large and EU sizing runs 0.7 size small at Mammut compared to standard systems. Order smaller numerically than you might expect.
- Layer mindfully with harnesses: Climbing harnesses are fitted over climbing clothes. If you plan to wear thick winter trousers, size up; for summer alpine climbing in lightweight trousers, size down within reason.
- Gloves need room for liner gloves: Mammut glove sizes assume you may wear thin liner gloves underneath. If you plan to wear thick liners, choose the next size up for comfort and adequate circulation.
- Backpack back length is critical: A poorly sized pack is uncomfortable and unsafe. Measure your back length accurately from the base of your neck (C7 vertebra) to the top of your hip bone with a flexible tape. This single measurement should guide your pack size choice.
- Check return policies before ordering: Sizing charts vary slightly between product lines (e.g., winter boots versus trail shoes). If you are between two sizes, consider ordering both and returning one, or contact Mammut's customer service for fit guidance on your specific item.
- Mammut sizing is consistent: If you have owned Mammut products before and they fit well, you can safely order the same size again. The brand's sizing system has remained stable.
