Boots & Work Shoe Size Charts
Find the correct size for work boots, hiking boots, wellington boots and safety footwear. Boot sizing can differ from regular shoes due to thicker socks, toe protection and varying last shapes — always refer to the specific brand guide alongside these charts.

Boot Type Sizing Guides
Work & Safety Boots
Safety boots with steel or composite toe caps require extra room at the front. Size up half a size from your regular shoe size, especially if wearing thick work socks. EN ISO 20345 certified boots must meet strict sizing tolerances — always check the manufacturer's fit guide.
- Allow 1–1.5cm of toe room
- Account for thick socks and insoles
- Wide-fit options available from most safety brands
Hiking & Walking Boots
Hiking boots should fit snugly around the heel and midfoot with adequate toe room for downhill walking. Try on boots in the afternoon and wear hiking socks. Many hikers size up half a size to prevent black toenails on descents.
- Lace tightly to prevent heel lift
- Ensure toes do not touch the front on downhill slopes
- Break in new boots before long hikes
Wellington Boots
Wellington boots are typically sized in whole sizes only. If between sizes, size up. Neoprene-lined wellies run slightly smaller due to the insulation. Calf width is important for taller styles — many brands offer standard and wide-calf options.
- Wear with thick socks for comfort and warmth
- Size up if between sizes
- Check calf circumference for knee-high styles
Chelsea & Ankle Boots
Chelsea boots are generally true to size but can vary significantly between fashion and heritage brands. Leather Chelsea boots will mould to your foot over time. Ensure the elastic gusset is not overstretched when putting on the boot.
- Leather styles stretch slightly with wear
- Pointed-toe styles may require sizing up
- Check the heel height as it affects fit
Popular Boot Brand Sizing
Timberland
Timberland boots generally run true to size. The classic 6-inch boot is available in multiple widths (Medium, Wide, Extra Wide). The leather upper will soften and mould to your foot after a break-in period of around two weeks.
Dr. Martens
Dr. Martens boots typically run large. Most wearers size down half to one full size. The leather requires a break-in period — expect some initial discomfort. Vegan leather styles do not stretch as much as traditional leather.
Scarpa
Scarpa hiking boots are sized in EU measurements and tend to run true to size. Their performance fit is designed for precision on technical terrain. Scarpa recommends measuring foot length in centimetres and matching to their EU size chart.
Hunter
Hunter wellington boots run true to UK size. The Original Boot is available in standard and wide-calf versions. Hunter recommends wearing their own boot socks for the best fit and warmth. Neoprene-lined styles run slightly smaller.
